This book was required reading for a promotional exam. I have a lot that I would like to say about this book but I will keep this review brief. If one is merely reading this book for knowledge it is full of great stories that shed light on the law enforcement sub-culture. Any aspiring law enforcement manager can learn a lot from this book. The examples the author uses are from past incidents but the concepts that are taught are still valid today (ask me how I know).
If one is required, or interested, in using this book for a promotional exam I would caution against it. This book will absolutely exhaust the average reader for a variety of reasons. First, the chapters are entirely too long. If one reads this book with the intent of retaining the concepts, completing a single chapter might take an entire day. (Why? I’m glad you asked.) The second less than desireable aspect of this book is the tangential comments and rabbit trails, all separated by entirely too many comma’s. The author begins a story in paragraph one. The author changes to another story in paragraph two. This continues for a few more paragraphs and then, without warning, the author returns to the story from paragraph one (rabbit trails). The foundation of the authors writing style seems to be tangential points. The author starts a sentence, adds a comma, makes one tangential point, adds another comma, makes another tangential point, and three lines later the author concludes the original point (annoying isn’t it). To make sense of the sentence one has to cover all of the tangential points and simply read the beginning and end of the sentence while ignoring the abundance of comma’s and tangential points. It makes it very difficult for one to "flow" through the book.
